The University of North Carolina Wilmington generously funded several grants and resources toward the Forest of DREAMS community service project for Spring 2016.

  • Professional Leave Reassignment

Dr. Janna Robertson was granted leave from teaching classes during Spring 2016 so she could devote time to several extensive community engagement research projects. Her main focus was the mural for DREAMS of Wilmington. She collaboratied with several other faculty members and graduate students to support their research interests.

  • SURCA Grant

A Spring Undergraduate Research and Creativity Award funded 7 undergraduate students to work with Dr. Robertson on the impact of community service learning.

  • Community Engagement Grant

Dr. Kristin Bolton and other colleagues investigated the impact of PALW (Police Activities League of Wilmington). We funded 5 creatures for the neighbors to paint with PAL officers to support the mural project.

  • EDN 414 Integrating Arts in Elementary Education

Three sections of Spring 2016 UNCW course required students to participate in the mural activity for 3 hours so they could experience a community service arts project.

  • Building a Better Wilmington Campaign

Building a Better Wilmington Campaign filmed a documentary called "Brushstrokes" by Jillian Carney about the Forest of DREAMS Mural. We will post it on this website when it is ready for public viewing!

APA supported the UNCW Dropout Prevention Coalition in running the Wilmington Regional GRADNation Summit in December 2015. Any additional funds were allocated toward  activities that support students and promote school graduation. The Forest of DREAMs mural was one of the actions that resulted from the summit and many of the organizations sponsoring were participants in the summit. Some of the funds from that grant were allocated to increasing student involvement in the mural.
